April Almanac: "April is a promise that May is bound to keep" ~Hal Borland
April doesn't make a grand announcement. She's subtle. Sort of hums to let you know she's close. Flutters in the periphery. And when she lands-like the ruby-throated hummingbird at the garden feeder-the world sings out. April is a month of sweet transition although this particular April has been quite the trying time dealing with the COVID-19 epidemic. So let's just imagine April is the norm......Here goes..... Purple martins replace purple finches. Yellow jessamine twists, climbs, dances across the landscape. Silver maple is flowering, and on the ground beneath it, you will find the first of hundreds of brilliant green samaras (seed pods) that will spiral to the earth in the coming weeks. As I sit at my laptop and pound away at the keys, I can smell a strong aroma of the fresh rosemary I just cut from the garden. The sweet, subtle scent gives me the calmness you would encounter at a day spa. I immediately transition to what April mornings bring in terms of fashion. The mornings are knit scarf and corduroy-cool, but in the afternoon, your feet are bare, and you are sunning in a patch of tender young grass.
April generally is the time for your local harvesters and farmers to open their harvest for strawberry pickin'! Yes....I said pickin'! Just last week my best bud and neighbor treated me to a delicious homemade pound cake (I will try my best to post her recipe just as soon as I squeeze it out of her) topped with vanilla ice cream and fresh strawberries. Margaret Atwood once quoted..."In the spring, at the end of the day, one should smell like dirt." The countless hours we all have spent in our garden during this quarantine we all should have "yard of the month" signs displayed. Isn't it sad to admit that it takes a situation such as the COVID-19 to actually "stop and smell the roses?" I have found myself actually taking the time to enjoy the many things I have taken for granted. Just today I actually put together a chicken coop! No....I do not own chickens (yet) but it just seemed like the thing to do at the time. Isn't it strange to see how our impulses change with each situation. Now if I was in a Chanel store.....things would have been much different but I will settle for a chicken coop for now. Seeing all the families out on the sidewalks riding bikes and engaging in family activities brings such warmth to my soul. What should one actually make from all of this? Is this some type of lesson for all of us? Hhhhmmmm... well let s just say that this is a wake up call for all of us and I can't say that I believe things will ever be the same. We will be more mindful and cautious of the fine details that surround us and maybe just maybe we wont take things for granted. Find happiness in something each and every day.
Spring is here, yes. But if you can't seem to shake the final chill of winter, here's one for you! Warm Your Bones with a signature April drink. (add a little bourbon if needed....or leave out the "little" part)
Ingredients:
2 cups of almond milk
1 tsp of turmeric (ooohhh this is so good for you)
1/2 tsp of cinnamon
pinch of grnd pepper
tiny piece of peeled ginger
pinch of cayenne pepper
1 tsp raw honey
Instructions:
Blend all ingredients, except cayenne pepper and honey, in a high-speed blender until smooth. Pour mixture into small saucepan add heat for 3-5 minutes (try not to scorch) *Do not let boil! Add cayenne pepper and honey, stir to combine. Drink Immediately!
Spring is probably my favorite season as I love the feel of my bare feet on the freshly cut lawn. The beautiful vibrant hues and textures that surround our most sought after favorite designers sends a chill through my spine. I love going to market and choosing from an array of fabulous ( I mean mouth drooling fabulous) collections. This April our ...market was canceled due to the COVID-19. As a buyer, we had to choose our collection from an on line catalog and I have to say....it's just not the same thrill! Although the collections are fabulous and simply divine.....it just took the wind out of my sail not being able to experience the excitement that comes with choosing our collections for the boutique. We have chosen some pretty amazing pieces and I think more now than ever....we are going to make sure we create an experience for our clients like no other shopping experience. Once again...I think this is one of the fine details that as a buyer I have probably taken for granted. I will make it my mission to make each shopping experience a unique and unforgettable experience (while always keeping the safety and health of our clients as top priority). So....with that said...let me show you a sneak peek of what our Spring collection has in store for you!
