Cornelius’ Former “First Lady” — Southern Roots, Community Spirit & a Little Need for Speed!

At CoCo Couture, our Top Model series celebrates women who prove that true style is about far more than what you wear. It’s about how you live, how you treat people, how you serve your community and the confidence you bring into every room.

This week’s Top Model is a woman many throughout the Lake Norman community already know and love.

Meet Sharon Hobson Washam—businesswoman, community supporter, animal lover, NASCAR fan, and the former “First Lady of Cornelius.”

Sharon’s story combines small-town North Carolina roots with years of community involvement, a career centered around people, and just enough adventure to keep things interesting!

 From a North Carolina Farm to the Heart of Cornelius

Sharon was born in Boonville, North Carolina, in Yadkin County, and grew up surrounded by life on a dairy and tobacco farm.

Those rural North Carolina beginnings helped instill values that Sharon has carried throughout her life: hard work, loyalty, kindness, and the importance of community.

And there’s one piece of advice from her father that has stayed with her through the years:

“Be kind to your enemies—you’ll surprise the hell out of them!”

We have to admit—that might be one of our favorite Top Model quotes yet!

It’s humorous, but underneath it is a lesson Sharon has clearly embraced: choose kindness, even when it isn’t expected.

 Cornelius’ Former “First Lady”

Many people around Lake Norman know Sharon through her longtime connection to the Town of Cornelius and her years as its unofficial “First Lady.”

But a title alone doesn’t tell Sharon’s story.

What stands out is her genuine interest in people and her desire to remain involved in the community she calls home.

Sharon is particularly passionate about causes including Cornelius Early Scholars and Little Smiles NC—organizations centered around creating opportunities and improving the lives of children and families.

For Sharon, community isn’t simply where you live.

It’s something you participate in.

And that spirit of involvement is one of the many reasons we’re so proud to feature her as a CoCo Couture Top Model.

 A Career Built Around People

Professionally, Sharon has worked in property management and semi-retired sales and marketing.

When we asked how she found her way into her profession, her answer was wonderfully simple:

She enjoys interacting with people.

Anyone who knows Sharon probably isn’t surprised!

Relationships, conversation and community have been common threads throughout both her professional and personal life.

 Meet Lily Mae

There is also a very special girl in Sharon’s life—her Aussiedoodle, Lily Mae. 

And let’s face it: a fabulous CoCo Girl with an adorable dog by her side sounds just about perfect to us.

 Wait… Did Someone Say NASCAR?

Now here’s where our former First Lady gets a little unexpected!

Among Sharon’s hobbies are reading, gardening, entertaining—and NASCAR racing.

Yes, NASCAR!

And when we asked about one of the craziest “dares” she’s ever accepted, racing made another appearance.

Sharon listed a NASCAR racing experience at Newton-Cloninger among her adventures.

So beneath that polished, sophisticated exterior is apparently a woman who doesn’t mind a little horsepower and speed!

We LOVE discovering these things about our Top Models. 

 The Fashion Question: Shoes or Purse?

Of course, this is CoCo Couture, so eventually we have to get down to the really serious questions.

Jewelry? Purse? Shoes?

Sharon narrowed her must-have accessories down to:

A woman after our own hearts.

The right shoe can transform an outfit, and the perfect handbag can finish it. And at CoCo, we’re always happy to help with both!

 If the White House Called…

Suppose an invitation arrived tomorrow for Sharon to attend a gala at the White House.

What would she wear?

For color, Sharon would keep things timeless and elegant with either black or a multi-colored selection.

We can already picture it: sophisticated, confident, polished—and finished, naturally, with fabulous shoes and the perfect purse.

 Why Sharon Represents the CoCo Woman

Our Top Models aren’t professional models.

They’re something better. They’re real women with real stories.

They’ve raised families, built careers, supported charities, faced challenges, served communities, taken chances, reinvented themselves and accumulated a lifetime of stories worth telling.

Sharon represents a woman who understands that you can be gracious without being boring, sophisticated without taking yourself too seriously, and community-minded while still having plenty of fun.

You can attend community events one day…

Garden or entertain friends the next…

And apparently climb into a race car when the opportunity presents itself!

That’s our kind of woman.
