IS THIS JUST A FASHION FAD?
For many of us, the best answer to that question is: So what if it is?"
Yes, fashion can be fickle. And yes some styles don't last very long. But it's a rare fad that only lasts for one season. So why not invest in that stylish fashion find today and wear it for as long as it stays popular? There's something to be said for slipping into an outfit that is "au courant." It can make us feel good, more attractive; it can lift our spirits, even help make us more self-assured. And, there's something to be said for looking in the mirror and loving what you see! It may be just a fad, but it's attractive today and conveys your sense of style to the world.
Of course, we can look back over the years and cringe over some of the fads that became popular. Remember "power dressing" and shoulder pads, velour track suits, the grunge look? Today those looks do seem dated, but they were popular in their time. Most people liked green appliances, Cabbage Patch Kids, and PDAs (personal digit assitants) for a while, too! Obviously, what's hot today can cool down tomorrow.
Yet there have been other "fads" that have morphed into something more long-lasting. Some have become on-again/off-again phenomena over the years (think bell bottoms) while others have stayed around far longer than originally expected. Animal prints fall into this latter category. Wikipedia notes that animal prints became popular in the 1960s. And they'veeven more fashionable today, showing up on everything from apparel to wallpaper. How many of us can remember, maybe 10 years ago, questioning whether we shouldn't buy that animal print top because it could be out of fashion next year. How wrong we were.
CoCo Couture currently has a gorgeous red and black fully lined animal print dress, shown above, that will look stylish and fresh years from now. Stop by the store to see it!
Of course, buying clothes - any kind of clothes -- should be based on finding what's suitable for our age and body type, not just on whether it's the latest fad. Those lucky enough to be young, tall and thin have a much easier time choosing clothing than those of us who are petite, plumpish and/or card-carrying members of AARP! Still, fads do have their place in many women's closets, as they have for decades.
Some say that buying all the latest fashion fads seems superficial. There can be a bit of resistance to fashion and the fads that cause us to spend money on them. But as The Guardian noted back in 2012: "Why do people bother keeping up with fashion? For the same reason that they follow football teams and soap operas." Because it's "fun," "enjoyable," and it gives us "a chance to take a break from the general tedium of real life. The changeability [read: fads] is part of the thrill."
What's one of the fashion "fads" coming up? Recent articles are talking about 3D printable clothes made of filaments, not textiles. They're supposedly biodegradable. Now that's a plus for our environment, given that the Council for Textile Recycling notes that the average person throws away 70 pounds of clothing and textiles each year.
